Easter is always a special time in the Cayman Islands with a huge variety of activities taking place across Grand Cayman. This year promises to be no different with everything from egg hunts and Easter Bunny visits to music and movies are planned – something to keep everyone entertained all through the long weekend.

Let the fun begin

‘Singing & Storytime with Miss Izzy’ will take place from 9-9.30am on 8 April on the Crescent lawn in Camana Bay. Little ones are invited to sing, dance and enjoy interactive stories.

To discover more about ducks The Backyard Farmer in Bodden Town’s ‘Duckling Discover’ is offering educational tours that allow families to interact with and hatchlings. These sessions will take place on 3, 5 and 6 April.

On Saturday, 4 April, the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park will be holding an inclusive Easter Family Fun Day from 9am to 12pm that promises to be lively and in a beautiful environment.

Later on 4 April, Easter at Bayshore will take place from 4-6pm at the Bayshore Mall in George Town. At this free event, families are invited to enjoy games, treats and entertainment all through the mall. There will be a scavenger hunt, a fresh face-paint design and the Easter Bunny will also bounce in for photos.

The ‘Lucky Egg Hunt’ has already begun at Camana Bay and will run until 7 April. Everyone can participate in this egg hunt as three ‘Lucky Eggs’ have been hidden around the Town Centre, each with a special message and worth a $100 gift card from Camana Bay. Clues can be found on social media sites for Camana Bay.

The Cayman Turtle Centre is also offering ‘Breakfast with Bunny’ which includes music, games, and kids will have a chance to meet the Easter Bunny himself on Saturday, 4 April.

Families can also take part in Tillies’ Easter egg hunt on Saturday, 4 April where the Easter Bunny will also be making an appearance. Tillies’ is located on Seven Mile Beach.

On Sunday, 5 April, Next Chapter bookstore in Camana Bay will hold an Easter Storytime and a Pinata Party from 10-11am.

Easter dining

For those more interested in dining out and enjoying some of the excellent culinary offerings, many of the Islands’ restaurants are offering Easter-themed specials. At Camana Bay, people can enjoy anything from a gelato-filled Easter egg at Gelato and Co. to an indulgent Easter lunch at Agua or the special Easter feast available at Union Grill.

Most major hotels and many restaurants offer sumptuous brunches and have dining events taking place.

Arts and culture

For those looking for something more introspective but still culturally significant, they can check out the current exhibition at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, which honours Randy Chollette. The gallery is open on Saturday, 4 April from 10am to 5pm. Chollette is a member of the ‘Native Son’s collective, a musician and educator, and in this exhibit, he shares both new and familiar pieces in this latest, vibrant show.

Under the Same Sun, an art show that celebrates the talent of young talent is also underway at the Mind’s Eye Centre at the junction of Walkers Road and South Sound Road. This show showcases the work of 51 students from eight schools in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac and was co-curated by John Reno Jackson and Rory Marchant-Kelly.

People can also see the childhood home of Miss Lassie, a fourth-generation Cayman who has been celebrated for her vision spirt, emotional depth and cultural significance. Her works are also on display at the centre.

The Cayman Islands National Museum is also open on Saturday, 4 April to enable visitors and residents to explore the history of the Old Courts Building, which is the oldest surviving public building in the Cayman Islands. The museum features works by several local artists and shares key elements of the Cayman Islands’ heritage.

Musical offerings

Music can be found across all three Islands at most of the major hotels and at restaurants and pubs throughout. A few include: Agouti Stew, the blues-folk-jazz local band who will be playing at Cracked Conch from 6.30-9.30pm on Saturday, 4 April; steel plan is offered at Rackam’s on the waterfront on Saturday evening; Denys Carbo who will be playing at Kaibo on Saturday from 1-3pm, and the Harpist Extraordinaire, Eugenio Leon will be performing live at Pane & Pasta in Camana Bay.

Family-friendly films

For movie buffs, there will be two family-friendly movies will also be at the Cinema over the Easter weekend. The animated family fantasy adventure film Super Mario Galaxy will be playing all through Easter weekend at various times at both the VIP and regular theatres. Also, on Saturday only, 4 April, Disney’s classic 101 Dalmatians will be playing as part of the Kids Club programming at 10am with both VIP and regular seating.
