A newborn baby was among 10 children aged under 1 who tested positive for COVID-19 in a single week, Chief Nursing Officer Dr. Hazel Brown revealed in her latest weekly report on the virus.
Referring to the 557 new cases reported between 28 Nov. and 4 Dec., Brown, in a video update aired on CIGTV, said the majority of cases were still occurring in the workplace, but that 171 people aged under 18 had tested positive. Those included an 18-day-old baby and nine other children under 12 months.
No information on the conditions of the children was included in the report.
45 new cases
According to the latest COVID figures, the number of new positive cases is continuing to decline, with health officials announcing 45 positives on Thursday. This is a considerable drop from the daily average of 80 new cases seen in the week of 28 Nov.-4 Dec. and the daily average of 108 in the week of 20-27 Nov.
All 45 new cases reported on Thursday were through community transmission.
The latest results bring the total number of active cases to 3,491 as at 8am Thursday – a drop of 22 from the previous day.
However, the number of COVID patients in hospital has risen by two, to 17, compared to Wednesday’s statistics.
Of the 7,839 people in Cayman who tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic, nine have died and 4,339 have recovered.
In her update, Brown noted that between 28 Nov. and 4 Dec., 58% of new cases were among females and 42% were among males. The ages ranged from 18 days old to 91 years old, with the average age being 31.
Sister Islands update
As of 8am Thursday, Faith Hospital on Cayman Brac confirmed there were eight active cases in the Sister Islands, with none identified in the previous 24 hours.
To date, there had been 120 total cases recorded in the Sister Islands, with 112 having recovered.
Vaccinations
So far, 58,371 people (82% of estimated total population of 71,106) have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 56,486 individuals (79%) have completed the two-dose course.
Additionally, 13,324 people (18%) have received a third, or booster, dose.
