For many, the marker of the festive season is picking up a real Christmas tree, or unboxing a loyal faux version, and decking its branches. But how to do it with style? Christmas connoisseurs Celebrations gave us eight tips on how to make your tree light up the room this festive season.
Tips for tree decorating
• If using an artificial tree, be sure to take the time to ‘fluff’ it up – unfurl branches, turn them in a natural direction and separate to give the most amount of fullness.
• A pro tip for adding lights is to wrap each branch in strands of lights all the way out to the tip, then back in and on to the next branch.
• Use larger ornaments deep inside the tree to give some depth to the overall design.
• Consider using silk flowers to add a lush element of décor to the look.
• To create a traditional look, use a mixture of reds, white, greens and silver or gold.
• To create a more contemporary look, use a monochromatic colour scheme, incorporating shades of the same colour and adding in a choice of metal colour such as gold/silver/champagne.
• Place lights on first. If using wide mesh fabric, place that next, crunching up in some places and keeping wider in others, then larger ornaments to create a visual anchor. Next comes the medium-size ornaments, then smaller ones. Add flowers and smaller ribbon last to finish the look.
• Varying the textures on the tree will create a compelling look – feathers, shiny objects, and soft velvet fabrics all add an element of interest against the natural texture of the tree branches.
