Senior football returned to the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, featuring both the women’s and men’s Cayman Islands Football Association Charity Shield matches, on Sunday, 9 Jan.
In a highly contested match, Sunset FC defeated Elite SC 2-1 in the women’s match. Then, Scholars ISC claimed a 2-1 victory over bitter rival Bodden Town FC in the men’s game.
Victory for Sunset in women’s match
Sunset and Elite went 0-0 until Sunset’s Natalia CorMoore found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Elite’s Ethana Villalobos answered back in the 44th minute, closing the first half 1-1.
The teams remained level throughout much of the second half. However, Sunset’s Alexia Bromfield capitalised on a rebound in the 75th minute, sealing the win for her team.
Scholars take the cup in men’s final
Scholars came out with forceful offensive play, scoring twice in the first half against the Bodden Towners. Jarol Smith opened the scoring in the 28th minute, followed by another goal by teammate Dwight Dunk in the 36th minute.
In the second half, Bodden Town held their own defensively and then made the score 2-1 in the 88th minute after Bodden Town veteran Matthew Suberan made good on a free kick.
After the match, Scholar’s head coach Colin Rowe told the Cayman Compass, “Over the years, with the silverware that we have won, the public and the media say that we are the favourites but, in truth, our preparation leading up to this match wasn’t all that good.”
He added that, with the season now under way, he is looking forward to the challenges the next several months will bring.
“There are a lot of good players here with a lot of good teams,” he said. “So, our objective right now is just to start focusing on the first game and then we will jump each hurdle as they come.”
