Just passing… Cruise ship spotted off West Bay

The rare sight of a cruise ship on the horizon off West Bay Wednesday had some reaching for their phones to snap photos of the vessel.

Cruise ships have been banned from stopping in Cayman since March 2020.

At the end of last year, government reversed a decision to allow Cayman’s first cruise ship since then, Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam, to stop at George Town, citing concerns that the ship could not accommodate Cayman’s pre-arrival testing policy.

As a result, one of the closest to come by here in almost two years was on Wednesday, as the 222-foot-long MSC Divina cruised by.

The Port Authority confirmed that the ship passed north of West Bay on its way to Jamaica.

Its first stop after leaving Miami was Cozumel in Mexico.
