Decanter, one of the world’s leading wine media brands, just released its ‘Wines of the Year 2021’ ratings, and the Cape Landing Blackwood Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Margaret River, Western Australia, garnered second place in the Best Red wine class.
For long-time Cayman resident Mark Lewis, owner and managing director of Cape Landing, the result was exciting news for his vineyard, which produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc wines that can be found at local retail stores, restaurants and luxury resorts.
According to wine writer Matt Walls, one of the panel judges, the Cape Landing entry was “A perfumed, pure Cabernet Sauvignon that feels very Margaret River; elegant,
refined, pure. Very silky, velvety, plush, but still fresh and harmonious. Very seductive.”
It was rated overall as “exceptional” with a score of 98 points, only one point behind the top spot, held by Henschke’s ‘Hill of Grace’ 2016, Eden Valley, South Australia.
“Cape Landing is delighted to receive this remarkable accolade from Decanter Magazine and a very distinguished panel of judges,” Lewis said. “The quality and reputation of the wines reviewed at Decanter’s ‘Wines of the Year 2021’ speak for themselves, and to be mentioned alongside the famous winemakers that produced these wines is incredibly rewarding.”
Lewis went on to speak about his staff at the vineyard, emphasising the importance of knowledgeable people being able to work together in order to produce something special.
“I really appreciate the ‘team’ aspect of winemaking,” he said. “The vineyard ecosystem we manage and the wines we produce, especially in times of a global pandemic, are entirely the product of the collective expertise, experience, and dedication of our Cape Landing team. My sincere thanks to our winemakers, Bruce Dukes and Remi Guise; vineyard manager, Matt Barling; and viticulturist, James Harris.”
