Twenty-one patients are in hospital with COVID-19, according to the latest Public Health statistics.

Through the entire week of 16-22 Jan., 29 COVID in-patients, including four who required intensive care, were treated. Of those, 74% were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, a weekly report by health officials indicated.

According to Public Health, 444 new cases of COVID were recorded as of Tuesday, 25 Jan. This brings the reported active cases, as of that date, to 5,220. No new deaths have been reported.

Public Health, in its latest weekly epidemiological situation report covering 16 Jan. to 22 Jan., recorded 16 new hospitalisations.

“Although the majority of these patients had COVID-related symptoms, some had no such symptoms and were found to be positive on routine testing,” the report stated.

Of the cases in hospital, six were on supplemental oxygen and one person was ventilated.

In addition, over the 16-22 Jan. reporting period, there were 6,016 active cases of COVID, representing about 8.5% of the population while known positive cases stood at 19.4% of the population.

During the same time frame, 6,886 PCR tests were conducted, with a total of 2,739 new cases registered.

There were 4,553 confirmed cases of Omicron by the end of the week-long period.

These numbers take Cayman’s daily average of new positive cases over the period to 391 across all three islands.

As of the reporting period, 6,578 cases were being monitored by Public Health.

Since the pandemic touched local shores in 2020, 15 COVID-19 related deaths have been recorded.

  1. Reshma,
I believe that HSA may be inflating the hospitalization numbers. Can you please confirm with HSA if this number indicates the “total number of people in hospital with COVID” or the number of people “actively being given treatment for COVID”
The reason I ask is that I understand that if you go to the hospital for a broken leg, test positive for COVID upon admission, you are being added to this 21 persons even if you are completely asymptomatic!
It sounds like the actual number may be closer to the 6 persons requiring oxygen, and 1 person requiring ventilation; with perhaps a few additional patients that are in hospital, vulnerable, but not receiving oxygen. I think we need some clarity from the hospitals on what the 21 represents.

  2. The public have the right to know how many of the HSA staff are still unvaccinated, and of these how often are they tested. In a quite a few of countries including the U.K., a number of patients have been infected with Covid, after admission for something else.
