Coffee chain perks up George Town

The revitalisation of George Town has received a burst of caffeinated energy after the opening of a new Starbucks in the town centre Tuesday.

Two government ministers were on hand for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the second branch of the international chain to open in the Cayman Islands.

Kenneth Bryan, the tourism minister and MP for George Town Central, welcomed the business opening.

“Not only a coffee house but a power house has now arrived in George Town, in the heart of our capital and I am so excited about that,” he said.

“Starbucks is known for its consistency and quality and it brings energy back to George Town.”

André Ebanks, minister for investment and innovation, was also on hand to welcome Starbucks to the capital.

“This is really a celebration of an international brand that is expanding in Cayman showing how there can be economic growth in Cayman even as we come through COVID.”

Ebanks joked that politicians attending Parliament sessions a few blocks away would be spoilt for choice. There are now three coffee shops within a stone’s throw of the court and Parliament buildings, with the Daily Grind and Blue Stone already close by.

Cafe del Sol, previously located on the opposite side of Heroes Square, closed in 2019.

The new Starbucks is in Monaco Towers, the same building as the Truman Bodden Law School.

Manager Deron Smith said the business was happy to be part of the Grand Cayman community.

“This will bring some life to this area,” he said of the new store.
