Police shoot at vehicle driving at ‘high speed’ toward them

Man charged with attempted assault on cop, drugs offences, among others

Police fired a shot when a man drove towards them at “high speed” as they attempted to detain him in Bodden Town on Wednesday, 2 March.

No one was injured as a result of the shooting, according to a press release issued Monday by the RCIPS.

However, according to protocol, the RCIPS has notified the Office of the Ombudsman of the incident. Both the police and the ombudsman will be reviewing the use of the firearm as part of the larger ongoing investigation.

The incident occurred when the officers first approached the car in the vicinity of Verneice Bodden Drive.

The lone occupant began to “act aggressively” and resisted attempts to detain him, according to the press release.

“At one point the man drove at high speed towards the officers, causing one of them to discharge a firearm towards the vehicle,” the RCIPS said.

The man managed to escape in his car, which officers found burned-out nearby.

Officers sustained minor injuries during the incident, the RCIPS said.

During a subsequent a search of the man’s home address, police recovered a quantity of ganja, along with seven ganja plants. The man was located and arrested by officers later that day.

Police have charged the man, 35, of George Town, with resisting a police officer, dangerous driving, attempted grievous bodily harm, production of ganja, and possession of ganja with intent to supply.

He was to appear in court today.
