After signing with Club Sportiv Tunari in Romania last month, Cayman’s national football player Joshewa Frederick-Charlery debuted for his new team this past week and exceeded his expectations as a defensive player.
Frederick-Charlery, 25, playing his first match with Tunari on Friday, 25 March, stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes and scored off of a corner kick, contributing to a 3-0 clean sheet victory against Dinamo Bucureşti II.
“The emotions were indescribable,” Frederick-Charlery told the Cayman Compass. “I can’t put into words how it felt to score on my debut… I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders and even though that’s not my job [as a defender,] I was happy to help the team out and continue to make Cayman proud.”
Frederick-Charlery reflected on his 20 years of playing football, saying it was a difficult journey. He thanked his fans and supporters and offered encouragement to young Caymanians coming through the local football scene.
“[I want to] show young Caymanians that they can do it too,” he said. “Just continue to inspire the future generation. I just want to thank all the people that supported me, my mom, my uncle, my girlfriend, everyone for believing in me and helping me through this journey because it’s not an easy one.”
He added, “I hope that I can replicate this performance and continue to grow off the back of this. [And] continue to be an ambassador for my beautiful islands.”
Frederick-Charlery is scheduled to play his second match on Saturday, 2 April, against Rapid II.
