Public Health in its latest weekly update reported that one more person, who was fully vaccinated and suffering from severe co-morbidities, has died from COVID-related causes.

This brings the total number of COVID-related deaths in the Cayman Islands since the start of the pandemic to 26, Public Health said.

The report covers the week of 3-9 April, during which 284 new cases of COVID-19 were reported – four fewer than the previous week.

Fewer tests were carried out during 3-9 April, health officials noted – with 1,046 tests conducted in that week compared to 1,436 from 27 March-2 April, and 1,179 tests in the week before that.

Public Health said the test positivity rate was at 20.9%.

During the entire week, seven new patients with COVID were admitted to hospital, half of whom were vaccinated.

In a separate daily update, Public Health also reported that as of Tuesday, 13 April, there were 638 estimated active cases of COVID-19 in Cayman Islands, with four patients in hospital for COVID-related causes on that date. Of those, three are unvaccinated, Public Health said.

Officials said that, since March 2020, 255 COVID-19 patients had been hospitalised.

Clusters of cases

Public Health said public gatherings appeared to be leading to clusters of cases on island.

Officials noted that the Omicron B.A. 2.3 variant, with a greater ability to spread, continues to be the leading strain in Cayman.

“Therefore, it remains crucial that prevention measures (wearing of masks inside; maintaining social distancing as much as possible; washing hands frequently; isolating/testing when symptomatic or if close contact with cases) are strictly followed during such gatherings, as per current legislation,” the report stated.
