There is almost nothing finer than a public holiday weekend… unless it also includes an auto show.
You don’t have to be a gearhead or covet a room full of Hot Rod back issues to appreciate vehicles that are truly works of art. The eye-popping colours, the sparkle of a shiny bumper, the smell of quality leather seats… it’s like catnip for all.
On Monday, 16 May, from 11am-6pm, the Cayman Charity Auto Show – an official Queen’s Platinum Jubilee event – will be setting up shop in George Town. Vintage cars, electric supercars, trucks, motorcycles, service vehicles and souped-up remote control boats and planes.
The display will stretch from the junction of Mary Street and North Church Street, through Fort Street, and across to Cardinall Avenue.
There is no entrance fee, so the public is welcome to just come along and enjoy, but as this is doubling as a fundraiser, organisers will be collecting donations from spectators. In return, those who donate automatically get entered in a door prize draw, and will be given the chance to vote for ‘Best in Show’.
Anyone who is particularly generous gains access to the VIP area in a shaded section next to Sandbar.
All vehicle participation fees will be donated to a range of charitable groups: R3 Cayman Foundation, Humane Society, Cayman Community Farms, Plastic Free Cayman and 100 Men who Care.
Last year’s auto show, hosted by Island Air, raised over $65,000 for Resilience Cayman. This time around, as part of a programme through R3, donations made to that foundation will be matched by the Kenneth B. Dart Foundation.
Event organiser Douglas Cameron (J.R.), said in a press release, “This event is a great opportunity to bring out the whole family and create memories for this once-in-a-lifetime Queen’s Platinum Jubilee event.”
Beyond drooling over the machines on show, guests will be entertained by the Sound Off Competition with impressive speaker action pumping beats out to the crowd; the ‘Best in Show’ contest, which is people’s choice; and seeing who will take home the custom, collectable trophies for Super Car Class, Street/Stock, Modified Class and Classic Car Class.
So, what are you waiting for? Get your motor runnin’ and head out on the highway towards George Town for a great day out, surrounded by sweet rides. You won’t believe your ears and eyes.
