Nearly 2,000 people went through the gates of the multi-hour event presented by Sandbar and held in George Town on Friday, 3 June, with easily the same number attending the Absolute Queen tribute act the following night.
The 3 June festivities, which started in the afternoon, featured performances from local musicians, DJ talent, 20 vendors serving up delicious dishes as part of Live Street Food Festival, and Jamaican reggae headliner Protoje.
Despite less-than-positive weather reports heading into the weekend, organisers decided to move ahead as planned and were rewarded with minimal interference from the elements.
Carlo Lee, experience architect from the Live Street Food Festival team, was very happy to see people turn out to enjoy the festivities.
“Our patrons, vendors, sponsors/partners, entertainers and, of course, Mother Nature, made the third edition of our street food offering legendary,” Lee said. “Our presenting partner – Sandbar, went above and beyond to ensure we could deliver on our commitment to a delightful guest experience. Thanks again to everyone involved in making this a very successful event, love yah like cook food!”
The section of North Church Street between Mary Street and Fort Street was blocked off in order to accommodate the large number of attendees and food vendors with an impressive stage set up at the back of the Waterfront Centre parking lot, complete with professional sound and lighting production.
Next up in the two-day food and concert programme, was Absolute Queen headlining Foster’s Summer Festival on Saturday, 4 June as a free performance for the community, and to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. People turned out to support the opening acts earlier in the day, and then to sing along enthusiastically with the visiting tribute group which performed hit after hit by the legendary Queen band.
Sean Reid, proprietor of Sandbar, said, “We are so proud as a community in the Cayman Islands to have been blessed to be able to represent Her Majesty the Queen on her Platinum Jubilee through the gathering of… friends, family and the live music of Absolute Queen. May God bless and save the queen.”
The concerts may be finished, but the Platinum Jubilee celebrations continue with services of thanksgiving on all three islands on Sunday, 5 June, the Queen’s Birthday Parade and Garden Party at Government House on Monday, and, finally, a spectacular firework display all along Seven Mile Beach on Monday, 6 June at 8pm.
