Finishing two places ahead of the last swimmer to cross the finish line during the Flowers Sea Swim on Saturday, Governor Martyn Roper completed the mile-long event in just over an hour.
Recording a time of 1:07:06, according to the official results, Roper told the Compass he experienced cramp during the swim.
“I finished, that’s the main thing,” he said.
“I’ve never been a strong swimmer. I wish I could swim a bit faster, but you can’t have everything in life,” he told the Compass at the finish line.
Roper, who recently celebrated his 57th birthday, said he was happy to take part in the major event, while also contributing to a good cause.
“This is one of the best open water swims in the world and it’s just fantastic, beautiful scenery, so I’m just delighted to take part and support the amazing Flowers family and YMCA in their new initiative – a free swim programme to enable our kids from primary schools to learn to swim.”
He shared the same sentiment in a social media post, reflecting on the 30th annual event:

When asked if he would be taking part in next year’s event, he said: “My tour is coming to an end. So, I’m not sure if next June I will be here… but at least in my time here I can say that I’ve done the Flowers swim.”
