Hundreds roll out in honour of much-loved motorcyclist

Tributes to Kashwayne McKenzie after death on the track

Hundreds of automobile and motorcycle enthusiasts went the extra mile on Sunday, forming a procession of cars, bikes, pickups, and dump trucks that took over the streets of Cayman in honour of the late Kashwayne McKenzie.

McKenzie, 29, passed away after his black Suzuki motorcycle crashed during a race on 28 Aug., at Parkers Raceway in Bodden Town.

The ‘humble’ pro rider and father-of-four was loved amongst his peers, something that was evident during the ‘Roll-Out’ where over 200 drivers joined friends and family to pay their respects.

The memorial event, led by McKenzie’s burgundy Ford F350 carrying a black ribbon and with his family inside, featured motorists leaving Spotts Dock and journeying to the Seven Mile Public Beach where a candlelight vigil took place.

“We, the family of Kashwayne McKenzie, are most grateful for all who came out to support the Roll-Out and Candlelight,” Dennellia Stewart, sister of McKenzie told the Cayman Compass.

“It was amazing to see so many supporters and enthusiasts, from young to old turn up.”

She said the event was a fitting tribute for her brother, who was also a prison officer.

“This is what he loved and what he would have wanted. He was a professional bike rider, driver and a trucker.”

During the Roll-Out, bikers made special tributes, performing stunts and burnouts, while the truckers all revved their engines and blew their horns in McKenzie’s memory.

More tributes were made by family and friends during the candlelight vigil, where lanterns and balloons were sent off. McKenzie’s two daughters and two sons were also present during the gathering.

“It was an emotional day for us, especially his four children, who [led] the walk down to the beach for the candlelight,” Stewart said. “It feels like it is hitting home for them now as we are getting closer to saying our final goodbye.

“We had been planning the event for some time now, so it was spectacular to see it all come together and see everyone come out to show their love for him.”

Stewart also thanked police and prison services for supporting the event.

Churchill’s Funeral Home has announced that a thanksgiving service for McKenzie will be held at First Baptist Church on Crewe Road, this Saturday, 8 Oct., at 10am, with the interment to follow at Prospect Cemetery.
