The Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association’s has named 10 national synchronised swimmers to represent the jurisdiction at the 2022 Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation Championships in Panama.

The artistic swimmers, which will be accompanied by coaches Alissa Moberg-Kinney and Megan Palmer, are scheduled to depart Cayman on Sunday, 16 Oct.

Moberg-Kinney told the Compass that the event will be a first for seven of the athletes representing Cayman.

“For the first time, we are sending a 12-and-under team to [an international] event,” she said. “I expect their eyes are going to be open. It’s going to be a learning opportunity. It’s just about the mental preparation now, at this stage.”

The CCCAN championships, which take place 18-22 Oct., at the Eileen Coparropa pool in the Panamanian capital will also feature a junior team of older swimmers from Cayman.

“I think it’ll be a very good experience for everyone,” Alexandria Owen, a junior, told the Compass. “We haven’t competed in a while and it’s going to be a good end-of-season meet, hopefully.”

Her teammate Amelia Travers, who will be competing for the 12-and-under team, said she is happy to have been selected and hopes to make Cayman proud.

“I am so excited, I can’t even explain to you how excited I am,” she said. “Since being selected for the team, we have worked five days a week, two hours each, sometimes three. We expect to [place] close to the top… I think we are fairly confident.”
