On the heels of the Department of Sports’ District Basketball Boys and Girls Under-19 Tournament, Director Kurt Hyde is looking to launch similar competitions for netball and cricket.
Hyde told the Compass that the department has used the basketball initiative as a ‘template’ to help with their upcoming plans for more sports throughout the island.
“We want to apply it to some of our other focus sports that are lacking in a bit of community competition,” he said. “We are looking… to try and run a netball district championship and a cricket district championship.”
The new district competitions will offer opportunities for more young people to get involved in sports, according to Hyde.
“It’s about bringing it to the districts, so people don’t have to travel,” he said. “We are targeting the people who aren’t necessarily involved in a team… and here they get to learn the fundamentals.”
He added there is also a need for more coaches. “We are appealing to a lot of our ex-players in whatever sport we run, to come out and assist wherever you can.
“So, hopefully, after this, we’ll get some community coaches to come out and assist us with this because we need it. There are a lot of kids out there… but we just need more coaches.”
Both the cricket and netball district tournaments are expected to begin in the third or fourth quarter of this year, according to Hyde.
