Two-legged and four-legged walkers were out in force early Sunday morning for the annual Humane Society Walk and Wag 5K fundraiser.
As well as pet dogs taking part, walkers along the Safehaven route were encouraged to pick up dogs from the shelter beforehand so that they got a walk as well. Around 50 shelter dogs, as well as several foster dogs, were taken for a walk along the route.
At the beginning of this month, there were more than 60 dogs at the shelter, and another 83 in foster homes. Funds raised at the walk go towards feeding, housing and providing medical care for the animals.
More than 300 people took part in Saturday’s walk, which raised at least $10,000, Humane Society board member Saskia Salden said.
“I am very happy, as the funds are very much needed, we have a lot of dogs and cats with additional medical needs,” she said. “Some needed surgery and physio, and not enough funds are available for these unexpected expenses, so this fundraiser was very important.
