The Cayman Islands Humane Society held its latest ‘Puppy Rodeo’ over the weekend, showcasing some of the pups and dogs at its shelter.

Saskia Salden, a director at the Humane Society, said the event, held at The Roost in George Town on Saturday, 4 Oct., gave potential fosters and adopters a chance to see the animals outside of the shelter, which is currently full.

She told Compass Media, “This is an adoption event. Our end goal to get dogs adopted. Some people don’t want to come to the shelter, so this is a perfect situation and opportunity for people to come and meet them in a different environment, [which is] not as stressful as the shelter.”

She added, “It’s a nice area to be in. People can come and have a drink, have something to eat, so it’s a great way for the public to meet our dogs and puppies.”

The Humane Society’s shelter on Sound Way, which houses abandoned or stray dogs and cats, is packed with the animals, as the charity tries to rehome them.

Salden said there is a constant need for people to give the animals new homes, as well as for volunteers.

“We always need people to help us foster and adopt. Come and meet them, come and walk them, donate,” she said. “And we also need flight escorts – people flying to Canada and New York, to help us get these dogs off island, because lovely, wonderful homes are waiting for them on the other side.”
