Miniature cottages just waiting for some colour

Newly built and primed with a white base coat of paint, three miniature Caymanian-style cottages are just waiting for their final splashes of colour before being given pride of place at locations across Grand Cayman.

The cottages, each about three feet tall, were built from the remnants of, and inspired by, little houses that had been dotted around West Bay, which had fallen into serious disrepair.

Fiona Jackson, who loved the look of them – even in their dilapidated state – and a small group of volunteers cleared the dirt and debris from them, picked them up, and took them to Savannah to the man who originally built them in the mid- to late-2000s, David Smith.

Over several months, he rebuilt them, and now they’re back in West Bay, just waiting to be painted, using a colour palate and design chosen by local children.

Jackson launched a colouring competition, inviting kids to submit their designs. Two schools are taking part and any other young artist wanting to send a design is welcome to do so. The deadline for receipt of entries has been extended to 31 March.

“The pictures are looking amazing,” she said of the entries already received.
