Cayman athletes won medals and broke records at the 31st Annual BAYTAF Classic, held at the University of South Florida on 27-28 May.

Mustang Track Club and Speed Athletics returned home with a combined 43 medals – 30 and 13, respectively.

Leading the haul was CARIFTA gold medalist Andrew Stone of Mustangs. Stone, 17, who won gold in four events, most notably the high jump where he leapt over 2.07 metres for a new personal best, breaking the meet record for the 17-19 age group.

But he wasn’t done there, he went on to set another meet record, this time in the long jump with a gold-medal effort of 7.36m, besting the previous top distance that had stood for 21 years.

Another standout, Davonte Howell, Cayman’s first male gold medalist in the 100m at the CARIFTA Games, added to his hardware by clocking 10.62 in the finals, the fastest time at the event.

Top Mustang prospect Aaliyannah Anderson won gold in the 100m finals, stopping the clock at 12.53. She went on to win silver in the 200m and contributed to gold in the mixed medley finals.

Her teammate Brianna Smith won gold in both discus and shot put, and took silver in the javelin. Celona Palmer won three medals in the 10-year-old girls category.

Jahriah Ngyou won three silvers in the 11-year-old girls division in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, and in 11-year-old boys, Tahir Zeleya won gold in javelin and silver in high jump.

Speed Athletics, which took 14 athletes, claimed first place after accumulating the most points in the BAYTAF small club category.

Many of the athletes who competed will now turn their attention to the Cayman National Championships later this month.
