Cayman Connection executive director Ashlea Smith has issued a call for nominations for the organisation’s second annual ‘Making Waves Awards’.
Smith, speaking with the Cayman Compass Thursday, said she is hoping for more nominations for the awards as the deadline for submission, 12 June, looms.

“We are super excited for this second year of the awards. As the deadline soon approaches, we encourage anybody to submit a nomination to recognise a Caymanian making waves overseas and going the extra mile in their respective fields. We really don’t want to miss anybody or let anybody slip through the net who we really should be championing,” Smith said.
Caymanians living overseas for a minimum of 12 months through 31 May 2023, as well as full-time students living overseas, are eligible for the awards.
Nominations can be submitted online here.
The 2023 Cayman Connection Making Waves Awards programme includes the addition of a ninth category, Inclusion, which aims to shine a light on those who proactively seek and act on ways to make the community they live in more inclusive.
The other eight categories capture a range of fields and interests: arts and culture; STEM; environment & sustainability; sports; financial, legal & professional services; education; health & wellness; and tourism, travel & hospitality.
A five-member panel will judge the nominations, using criteria including the promotion of the Cayman Islands and ‘Caymankind’ overseas, entrepreneurialism and innovation.
Smith, in a recent Compass interview, said she is looking to expand the organisation’s network connecting Caymanians, students, residents and families.
She said she believes there is so much potential for the organisation not just as a network for the Caymanian community overseas, but also for “those who have a bit of Cayman in their hearts”.
Cayman Connection is a not-for-profit membership organisation based in the UK supporting Caymanians, friends and associates of the Cayman Islands.
