Thirty years after the Tom Cruise legal thriller ‘The Firm’ catapulted the Cayman Islands to screen infamy, several films shot on island, and one penned by local talent, are set to make their debuts.

The glut of movies showcasing Cayman follows a period during the COVID lockdown when production companies visited the island to shoot in a virus-free bubble as the world struggled to cope with the pandemic.

The end-result of their efforts is about to hit the screens. Cayman’s Frank E. Flowers is also involved in a separate production expected to hit cinemas soon.

Here’s what’s coming:

The Retirement Plan

Nicolas Cage stars as a Cayman Islands beach bum asked to come out of retirement to save his daughter’s life. The film is expected to hit theatres in the US on 24 Aug.

Ron Perlman stars as an elderly baker who gets pulled into the criminal underworld to avenge his son’s death by a crime boss played by Harvey Keitel. The film is slated to hit theatres on 28 July.

Bob Marley: One Love

Caymanian filmmaker Frank E. Flowers is one of three writers who penned the screenplay on the life of legendary reggae musician Bob Marley. Shot in London and Jamaica, the film is expected to be released in 2024.

Littlemouth

Littlemouth tells the story of a computer scientist who is recruited by a tech billionaire to work on a project that could change humanity’s place in the universe. Starring Dennis Quaid, the film is currently in post-production, with no release date yet announced.

Daniel’s Gotta Die

Starring Iggy Pop and Bob Saget (in what would be his last role), this dark comedy sees a father’s plan to reconnect with his family hit a snag when he discovers they all want to kill him. Initially titled ‘Blue Iguana’, the film premiered at the Austin Film Festival in October 2022.

Some Other Woman

Starring Amanda Crew, this psychological thriller follows a woman whisked away to a tropical island for her husband’s work; later she encounters a strange woman who takes her life where reality begins to unravel.

Director Joel David Moore, in an interview at the Mammoth Film Festival in March, spoke of the cast and crew’s experience shooting in Cayman during the pandemic.

Unit 234

In this action-thriller, when a group of criminals comes to collect the contents of a storage unit, the woman running the storage facility has to play a game of cat and mouse to escape with her life.

Starring Isabelle Fuhrman, Jack Huston and Don Johnson, Unit 234 is currently in post-production.
