Cayman’s unique biodiversity and culture will be featured at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival as Cayman Connection partners with Mas band ELIMU to participate in the annual UK celebrations.
Cayman Connection executive director Ashlea Smith, told the Cayman Compass the event, the first one Cayman will be participating in, was a great avenue for demonstrating the island’s natural appeal.
“We’re so excited that we’re going to use this opportunity to showcase the invaluable contributions that the Cayman Islands continue to make to marine conservation; more specifically, our turtle research and protection whilst positively promoting our three beautiful islands to everybody involved,” she said via WhatsApp.
Cayman Connection, she said, will be hosting a section in the mas band on Monday, 28 Aug.
She said local artistes, including Mr. Notch and DJ Zeeky, will form part of the Cayman section.
“Our carnival Queen for the day [will be] former Miss Universe Cayman Islands Georgina Kerford,” she added.
Cayman Connection, she said, is a global “Caymankind not for profit organization” that connects, supports and celebrates Caymanians, friends of Cayman and associates living overseas.
“Our mission is to build a strong support network of people through a shared connection to the Cayman Islands across the world. We’re here to support the well being of all young people of Cayman whilst living, studying or working overseas and we aim to improve the global perception of all three islands through our network,” Smith added.
She encouraged Caymanians and friends of Cayman who are living in or will be visiting the UK to RSVP for the special Cayman Islands section.
“Save [your] space to come and play mas with us in August,” she said.
Notting Hill Carnival, which was established in 1966, is a staple on the UK calendar, bringing Caribbean revelry to the streets of West London.
Space is limited for the mas section so Smith is encouraging people to register early.
