Andrew Stone was the centre of attention on Tuesday, 8 Aug., after he broke the Commonwealth Youth Games long-jump record and became the first Caymanian in history to win gold in athletics since the first edition of the games in 2000.
Stone jumped 7.70 metres to surpass the previous record of 7.67m, set by Richard Seklorwu in 2015. Caymanian Jamal Walton came the closest to taking the top podium spot in 2015, where he ran to a silver medal in the 400m dash.
Earlier, Jillian Crooks took Cayman’s first gold at the Games in the 100m freestyle in a national record time of 55.18. She also added bronze medals in the 100m and 50m backstroke, in national record times of 1.02.10 and 29.51, respectively.
Additional action on day three of Trinbago 2023 featured Sierrah Broadbelt swimming to yet another national record at the National Aquatic Centre pool in Trinidad – a continuation of Cayman swimmers securing personal best times, national records and medals, including a gold.
Broadbelt touched the wall in 1:04.04 for the 100m butterfly finals to set a new national record – just a day after she claimed the 13-14 national record in the 50m fly.
Broadbelt also contributed to an eighth-place finish in the finals of the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, where she was joined by Crooks, Teagan Nash, Allyson Belfonte, Connor MacDonald, James Allison and Harper Barrowman, who finished her 400m free final on the day in eighth.

On Sunday, Allison won silver in the 200m freestyle, becoming the first swimmer ever to medal at the games.
The team will be looking to make more history on Wednesday, 9 Aug., during day four, where Stone will return for the high jump event at 3pm.
