Travel along Edgewater Way in Grand Harbour is expected to become easier and safer for both drivers and pedestrians following proposed upgrades to the 1,700-foot-long road.

The National Roads Authority is planning to create a two-lane undivided roadway with pavements on each side, and improve drainage and lighting.

It will then form part of a service link between Grand Harbour and Kings Sports Centre.

The authority is currently requesting proposals from professionally qualified companies to complete full design and construction drawings for the upgrade.

Applicants have until 28 Aug. to submit their offers on the government’s public purchasing portal.

According to the project description, once the contractor is chosen they will begin work on 4 Sept.

When it has the designs, the authority will then carry out the majority of the construction work using its own equipment and personnel, with subcontractors hired as needed.

During a public meeting on proposed changes to the Grand Harbour roundabout in May, the subject of Edgewater Way was broached several times.

One resident accused Edward Howard, NRA managing director, of avoiding the subject.

He responded: “I’m avoiding it because some of the control of that is out of our hands,” adding that a land claim issue was involved.

Howard continued: “If we were to build a road, we could build a road in two to three months, but we have to get over these hurdles first.”
