The driver in Wednesday’s fatal collision, which claimed the life of Jamaican father Randre David Lescombe, who was also known as Errol Simpson, is under investigation for causing death by dangerous driving, police have confirmed.

In a brief update Friday evening, police said the man, who was taken into custody shortly after the crash Wednesday night, was arrested on suspicion of the offence and released without charge on bail as investigations continue.

They are yet to formally release the name of the deceased man.

However relatives, speaking with the Cayman Compass Friday, said they are still trying to come to terms with Lescombe’s sudden death.

The 39-year-old arrived in the Cayman Islands late last week and to take up a job in construction.

He had two children and was expecting a third in November.

The crash that claimed Simpson’s life occurred shortly before 11:20pm Wednesday.

The car he was in was travelling southward along the Esterley Tibbetts Highway and crashed into a fence just north of the Butterfield roundabout.

Emergency services responded to the collision, and both occupants of the vehicle were taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was declared dead, police said.

The second man was detained and later released from custody.

Police said the matter is being investigated by the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit and appealed for anyone with any information to contact 649-6254.

The Jamaican father is the sixth road death recorded for 2023 in the Cayman Islands.

Lescombe’s relatives are appealing for help to get the man’s body back to Jamaica.
