Former Caymanian national swimmer John Bodden has secured an interim head coach position for the swimming team at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, amid his studies for a master’s degree in psychology.
He will lead Catholic’s swim programme throughout the 2023-24 season, the university announced earlier this month, following the resignation of head coach Tyler Ziegler.
Bodden moves up the coaching ladder after serving as assistant coach during the 2022-23 season for the school’s aquatic programmes where he helped the Cardinals win their seventh straight men’s title in the 10-school Landmark Conference.
That achievement earned Bodden, Ziegler and diving coach Courtenay Miller Landmark Coaching Staff of the Year honours.
“John Bodden showed he is more than prepared for this opportunity,” athletic director Kevin Robinson said on the Cardinals website. “His passion and energy for the student-athletes in the program is at such an elite level and he has demonstrated the coaching needed to keep our… programs at the championship level.
“He is ready for this moment and we look forward to Coach Bodden leading our programs.”
Following a successful 2022-23 season, Bodden retuned home the summer of 2022 to give back to local swimmers at his former club – Stingray Swim Club – coaching swim camps.
As a swimmer, Bodden earned first team honours in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while an undergraduate at McKendree University in Illinois.
He represented Cayman at three separate CARIFTA Championships, the Youth Commonwealth Games, Island Games and Pan American Games.
