Bodden Town West MP Chris Saunders is seeking the creation of a parliamentary select committee to review the “high cost of fuel” in the Cayman Islands against the backdrop of the rising cost of living.
In the upcoming sitting of Parliament next week, Saunders, through a private member’s motion, is seeking the support of his fellow lawmakers for the review.
The motion was seconded by West Bay West MP McKeeva Bush.
According to data from fuel regulator OfReg, the average price between 6-12 Sept for regular gasoline was $6.05, while premium gasoline was $6.22. Diesel was $5.57.
In making his case for his motion, Saunders said the “prosperity of our people is being eroded on a daily basis” by the high cost of living, which is partly driven by high fuel costs,
“as oil companies report record breaking profits”.
Saunders is asking Parliament to establish a select committee to review the cost of fuel before the end of next month, to be chaired by Minister of Planning Jay Ebanks and consisting of at least six members. He would like to see committee recommendations by the end of February next year.
He also wants some of the committee meetings to be open to the public.
He pointed out that section 70 of Parliament’s standing orders allows for the establishment of a select committee “to assist members in exercising its function under Part IV of the Constitution”.
