The National Trust for the Cayman Islands will once again be participating in the COP international climate conference with young Caymanian delegates.
“Cayman’s young people must understand the challenges that lie ahead and be prepared to meet them,” a National Trust press release noted. “COP28 is an excellent opportunity for our youth delegates to speak to a global audience, leading conversations while sitting next to world leaders.”
The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP28 will be taking place at the Expo City in Dubai from 30 Nov. to 12 Dec.
The conference has been held every year since the first UN climate agreement in 1992.
It is used by governments to agree on policies to limit global temperature rises and adapt to impacts associated with climate change.
The Cayman government is sending an official delegation and renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle has announced that she will accompany the group.
The young Caymanian delegates, aged 18 to 25, will be fully sponsored by the community to attend the conference.
Cayman National Bank and Caribbean Utilities Company have committed to the first sponsorships – they will receive regular personal updates to hear first hand from the youth delegates.
“The National Trust is tasked with preserving Cayman’s natural and historic heritage for future generations,” the press release said.
“Aside from unsustainable development, there is no greater threat to our heritage than climate change.
“Stronger storms, sea level rise, more frequent flooding events, bleached coral reefs, greater wildfire risk, and extreme heat threaten our delicate ecosystems and built heritage.”
