Four people were taken to hospital by ambulance to be treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at Northward Prison on Tuesday.
Emergency services attended the scene Tuesday afternoon, responding to a report of a fire around 3pm.
Police confirmed on Tuesday night that there was no structural damage to the property, and the prison has now been secured.
“Fire investigators have conducted preliminary crime scene assessment and a joint investigation between the [Cayman Islands Fire Service] and [Royal Cayman Islands Police Service] has now commenced regarding the circumstances that caused the fire,” police said in a statement.
According to an earlier police press release, issued at 4:05pm, a cordon was put in place and members of the public were asked to avoid the area.
An official at the 911 communications centre said the incident was reported just before 3pm and firefighters were on the scene.
The Compass will update this story with more information as it is issued.
