The Cayman Islands national women’s football team dropped their final match of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup to Curaçao on Monday, 4 Dec. – ending the tournament without a single victory.
Cayman, who sits at 166 on the FIFA table, played Curaçao at the Stadion Ergilio Hato in Willemstad, where the efforts of the 345 women proved to be inadequate as they lost 6-1, the worst result since they kicked off the CONCACAF event two months ago.
It marked the second consecutive loss to 178th-ranked Curaçao – the first encounter ended 0-2 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on 26 Oct. Prior to losing to Curaçao twice, Cayman drew 2-2 against 183rd-ranked Anguilla on 25 Sept., which followed a 3-1 loss to Anguilla on 21 Sept.
Following their first loss to Curaçao, Cayman women’s head coach Michael Johnson told the Compass that he and the team at the Cayman Islands Football Association have accepted that they will lose matches because of the inexperience of the young squad. He added that they understand this is a learning process for the team, one they are “happy to go along with” as the age of the players has “really affected the level of performance”.
Cayman’s senior national footballers will now break for the remainder of 2023. CIFA has not yet confirmed any of the competitions Cayman will take part in next year.
