National rugby sevens team prepares for new season

The Cayman rugby team is gearing up for the 2024 season, preparing for matches locally and regionally – spurred on by a new sponsorship deal.

The team will be playing at forthcoming events, such as the Tropical 7s rugby tournament in Tampa, Florida; Surfin’ 7s in Miramar, South Florida, where they will defend their 2023 title; the CRFU Invitational Tournament in Cayman; and, finally, the Rugby Americas North sevens.

The RAN tournament, in particular, serves as a qualifier for the World Rugby Sevens, Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games.

“The Lazarus sponsorship represents our inaugural year partnering with rugby union in the Cayman Islands and the wider Cayman Islands community… it is important for us to give back to our clients through an initiative that they can resonate with, and support – being sailing and rugby,” Dale Klynhout, managing director of Lazarus, said in the release.

The Cayman national rugby programme is a certified full member of the Cayman Islands Rugby Football Union, World Rugby and RAN.

Oliver Brown, coach of the national sevens team, said he was “delighted” with the new sponsor.

“Without the support of our key partnerships, the Cayman National 7s simply would not exist, let alone be able to show off the talent of our squad, including a number of young Caymanians coming through the ranks, on the world stage,” he said in a press release.
