A number of emails have been circulating in the public domain which falsely appear to be signed by former Commissioner of Police Derek Byrne, according to police.

RCIPS’s Digital Forensic Hub issued a press release stating that the sender claims to be experiencing banking issues and provides an attachment for more information.

This is a fake email and is an attempt to solicit personal details,” the hub wrote.

“The public is being urged not to click on the link in this email, or any email of this nature, especially if they are unsure of its origin, but instead to call and verify the content.”

“The public can be reassured that the RCIPS would never send emails requesting personal details in this manner.”
