Police are warning members of the public about a new phishing scam that involves individuals receiving text messages purporting to come from Cayman National Bank.

The SMS message claims that the recipient’s bank account has been frozen due to unusual activity, and advises the person to click a link to regain access.

“This text is fraudulent and clicking the link can result in your personal information, including banking details, being obtained by scammers,” the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service’s Cyber Crime Unit said.

The RCIPS issued this screen shot of the phishing SMS text, purporting to be from Cayman National Bank, and warned recipients not to click on the link.

The unit warned that if a person receives an SMS text message from CNB, or any other bank, to check via a phone call or other means if it is legitimate, and not to click on any links before doing so.

“Never provide any personal, banking or password details in response to such messages,” the unit said.

It advises anyone who has clicked on any such links, or provided personal information, to contact their bank immediately.
