In honour of Black History month, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation will be presenting ‘Echoes of the Past’, a performance themed around the black diaspora, at Harquail Theatre, on 24 and 25 Feb. at 7pm and 6pm, respectively.
Directed by local creative artist, choreographer, and actress Lesley-Ann Bernard-Ricketts, ‘Echoes of the Past’ is a “carefully curated collection of monologues, duologues, movement and music that highlights and interrogates the remnants of traumas caused by slavery and colonialism in the Cayman Islands and the diaspora,” explained Nicole Durrant, CNCF programmes coordinator.

The performance will feature well-known local actors including Michael McLaughlin, Giselle Webb and Julia Watkins.
Bernard-Ricketts told the Compass the production will “hopefully force us to take a look at ourselves”.
“The selves that have been shaped by our collective historical experience of the trans-Atlantic slave trade; the dislocation of millions of Africans to the west as “claimed property.”
She said, “It must be important for us to look and examine who we had to become in order to survive, to thrive, to free ourselves and maybe what we had to forget.”
The show, which is recommended for ages 18 and over, will be followed by a Q&A session. This will facilitate audience interaction and open up discussion on all the themes explored in the performance and how they relate firstly to Caymanian society and, then by extension, the global community, according to Bernard-Ricketts.
Ticket, which are $20, are available online at the TicketsPlus website or can be purchased either at the CNCF office or at the door on the night.
