Rising Caymanian heavyweight boxer Christopher Hurlston continued to improve, taking silver at the Hvidovre Box Cup tournament, in Denmark.
The ‘345 Viking’ was first matched up against Luca Basic, who was favoured to win, boasting a 7-0 record, with all of his victories coming from knockouts.
However, Hurlston would not be intimidated as he challenged Basic blow for blow with Hurlston proving to be the better man and ultimately getting the win by decision.
Following that success, Hurlston advanced to the finals, where he faced hometown boy Casey Douglas. The fight would end in a controversial split decision in favour of Douglas.
Hurlston said he wasn’t pleased with the judges’ decision but added it was pointless to focus on the ‘could haves’ and ‘should haves’.
“My loss was against the hometown favourite, that’s why I feel he got the nod,” Hurlston, who trains at Henry Wharton’s Gym in England, told the Compass. “I listened to my instructions in the corner and executed as expected.
“My team is happy, so that makes me happy. Second place doesn’t count in the sport of boxing in my opinion, but I am happy with my performance at my first international tournament… but we move forward.”

The Hvidovre Box Cup silver medal comes just weeks after Hurlston made history by becoming the first Caymanian to win the Yorkshire Novice title.
Now holding a 7-2 record, Hurlston said it was back to the drawing board, with plans to stay busy with competition.
“There is more to work on but we will be back in the gym…and back to work to prepare for the next bout,” he said, noting that he wants to schedule another fight as soon as possible.
