Amateur boxer Christopher Hurlston has won the Yorkshire Novice title, making him the first Caymanian in history to ever hold the belt.
His victory also marks the first time in over a decade that a boxer from Cayman has held an amateur title.
“Winning the… title was an incredibly rewarding experience, one that fills me with immense gratitude,” Hurlston told the Compass after his bout on 22 Feb.
He defeated Muhammed Alet via split decision, in what was a bloody three-round fight, improving his record to 6-1.
The ‘345 Viking’ attributed his success to hard work, determination, and the support of his family, friends, and coaches, who he says have been an indispensable source of strength and motivation.
Hurlston, who trains at Henry Wharton’s Gym in England, had racked up an impressive undefeated streak which included a win over a former amateur champion. Though his winning ways came to an end in December, his recent title victory is a testament to those around him, he said.

“Their encouragement, whether it was a simple pep talk or a cheering presence in the stands, propelled me forward when the going got tough,” he said. “I owe a debt of gratitude to my coaches at Henry Wharton’s Gym. Their expertise, guidance, and dedication played a pivotal role in my success.
“Their belief in my abilities and their commitment to helping me reach my full potential have been invaluable. I am truly fortunate to have such a supportive network of loved ones and mentors standing by my side, and I am deeply thankful for their role in my journey to victory.”
No credit for CIBA
However, Hurlston said the Cayman Islands Boxing Association will get no credit for his accomplishments.

“As a Caymanian, I take immense pride in my heritage and cultural identity. However, it’s important to clarify that [CIBA] has played no part in my achievements since my departure from the island.
“Despite being a source of pride for me, the association has not provided any support or assistance in my endeavours. It’s not my intention to disparage anyone, but it’s crucial to set the record straight and ensure that credit for my accomplishments is attributed where it’s due.”
But someone he does credit from his homeland is his former coach Floyd Trumpet, who coined the nickname ‘345 Viking’.
“I’d like to show appreciation to my former coach without who I would not have had a base to start learning boxing.”
Hurlston is looking to make the Cayman Olympic team by winning an upcoming qualifying event and, if successful, he’d be walking into Paris as a champion.
