The first joke of the evening caused a bit of confusion as the emcee introduced the opening act at the Laughter Lounge on Friday at Camana Bay Cinema.
Gesturing grandly to the side of the stage, he announced the “very funny” Joel Byars would be performing, leaving the audience looking around for the comedian, until Byars admitted he was introducing himself and laughter ensued.
Thus began an entertaining evening of comedy from Byars, Daphnique Springs and Alfred Kainga in front of a very receptive audience on 19 April at the latest Laughter Lounge comedy show.

Coming from a “fixer-upper husband” of seven years, the Atlanta-based Byars shared harrowing tales about going to sleep at a reasonable time and the glory days of playing Division 3 football.
Next to the stage was Springs, who joked about the fact the theatre didn’t actually have a stage.
She had viewers in stitches about the fraught dating climate for people in their 30s.
Kainga, who has appeared on Comedy Central, closed out the show with his storytelling style of comedy, playing on his experiences seeking official citizenship in the United States.
Audience members saved some of their biggest laughs for Kainga’s jokes about a recent tour in Jamaica, which included an adventure attempting to get directions to Bob Marley’s house.
The trio told the Compass they appreciated getting to perform here, especially with the energy of the audience.

“Sometimes these shows are even better than completely sold-out ones because the people who are there are invested,” Byars said.
Kainga added, “The whole experience was awesome. They hosted us well, and the audience was ready to laugh and had a blast.”
First-time attendee Matt Glendenning and six-time attendee Liana Benjamin both said Kainga’s performance was the highlight of the show and recommended others check out the next comedy night, which is a quarterly event.

Laughter Lounge organiser Rod Jefferson said he is more focused on providing a venue for great comedy than necessarily drawing huge crowds.
“We’ve been doing this for a while, and other comedians see the comedians coming here. After every show, for five days I’ll be inundated with people wanting to come perform,” he said.
Jefferson added that plenty of talented comedians have expressed interest in visiting the Cayman Islands, and anyone looking for a good laugh will have something to look forward to once financing is in place for the next show.
