Police recovered a handgun, a loaded magazine and bullets from a vehicle that crashed into a wooden pole as the driver tried to evade police.
The 32-year-old driver, of Bodden Town, who initially fled from police following the crash, later surrendered himself to police.
According to an RCIPS press release, police at a vehicle checkpoint along South Sound Road, on the morning of Tuesday, 23 April, observed a car “attempting to avoid the area”.
The police signalled the driver to stop but he didn’t comply, and “sped off” towards George Town.
“The police followed the vehicle at a safe speed and distance,” the RCIPS said, but stopped the chase “following a safety assessment” and lost sight of the car.
The police continued towards George Town, eventually finding the vehicle which had hit a wooden pole.
The driver was observed trying to flee the vehicle and escaped after “struggling with the officer”.
Police found the handgun, magazine and live rounds of ammunition in the vehicle, along with a quantity of ganja and drug utensils.
Later that day, the suspect surrendered to police and remained in custody Thursday, pending further investigations.
The release did not specify if or when the man would be scheduled to appear in court.
