San Antonio Spurs guard Blake Wesley will join Cayman youth ballers for the 2024 Camana Bay NBA Basketball Camp, taking place 22–26 July.
For Wesley, who expressed his excitement ahead of his first visit to the Cayman Islands, the opportunity to speak to and inspire up-and-coming players is something he takes pride in.
“I think camps are very important,” Wesley told the Compass. “I always think of it as giving back,” noting that he was once inspired by former NBA player Demetrius Jackson through a similar initiative in his early days in the sport.
“He inspired me to be a pro; I wanted to be like him,” Wesley said. Now at just 21 years old, playing at the highest level of basketball, he is in the same position as Jackson.
Wesley is the second San Antonio Spurs player scheduled to be a part of the local summer camp, held at the Arts and Recreation Centre. The other player was teammate Jeremy Sochan, who joined last year.
Wesley, a first-round pick of the 2022 NBA draft by the Spurs, plans to teach the Cayman ballers his tips and tricks and said he is open to answering all the questions they may have.
When asked what advice he’d give those aspiring to professional basketball, Wesley said, “Keep pushing forward every day.
“But remember, nothing is possible without the man above and just be humble. Every time you step on the court, don’t take it for granted. Just stay praying and put God first.”
Wesley’s expected appearance at the camp comes after the NBA and Dart recently announced an extended partnership to develop young athletes.
As part of the collaboration, Dart will host Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA week in November 2024. It will feature clinics and programming for players, fans and families, with 3-on-3 tournaments, skills challenges, clinics for aspiring female players and Special Olympics clinics.
