Dory, the giant plastic-eating ‘fish’ on Cayman Brac, was one of the few casualties of Hurricane Beryl after the storm swept past the island earlier this month.

The structure, made from PVC and netting, did not survive the strong winds of the storm that passed about 100 miles south of the Brac in the early hours of 4 July.

Geri O’Brien, who designed Dory, told the Compass, “Unfortunately, Beryl did a job on her and she can’t be fixed.”

She added, “I wanted to send a big thank you to all those who have collected plastic and fed her. Her belly was always quite full.”

Dory had spent the last four years on a grassy lot belonging to Tranquil Realty, opposite the Alexander Hotel on the Brac.

Residents would deposit their recyclable plastic in Dory’s mouth, which were then collected by the Department of Environmental Health and transported to the landfill.

The first shipment of plastic, much of it from inside Dory, was transferred from the Brac to Grand Cayman for recycling in March this year, O’Brien said.

In the absence of Dory, O’Brien is encouraging people to drop off their plastics, as well as cans and batteries, at the landfill on the Brac, where there are separate recycling containers for each.
