A 23-year-old Bodden Town man was arrested in connection with the road rage incident in Savannah on Wednesday morning in which flare gun was allegedly fired.

The man, who went to the Cayman Islands Detention Centre just before 5pm on Wednesday, was arrested by the police on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm (ammunition).

The Bodden Town man was also detained on suspicion of assaulting police, disorderly conduct in a police station and attempting to escape lawful custody.

Following his arrest, he “became aggressive and assaulted the officers”.

“Reasonable force was used to subdue the man, who sustained minor injuries as a result,” police said.

The man was taken to the hospital for treatment for those injuries as well as injuries sustained from the collision.

Police said while at the hospital being treated for his injuries, the Bodden Town man unsuccessfully attempted to escape police custody.

The man remains in custody.

Wednesday’s alleged flare gun incident followed a collision between a HiAce utility van and a BMW sedan just before 10am Wednesday near Cool Spring Close in Savannah.

Police said an altercation ensued between the drivers after the collision and the Bodden Town man allegedly retrieved what police said is believed to be a flare gun.

He discharged a round, then ran from the location, leaving his vehicle behind following the arrival of the police, an RCIPS release on the incident said.

The second driver, police said, sustained minor injuries as a result of the physical altercation that occurred between the men.

Investigation into the matter continues.
