For years, beachgoers have had to depend on portable toilets at the popular Governors Beach, but now the site is a step closer to getting its own public restrooms.
After planning permission was granted in November last year to erect bathrooms at the beach on West Bay Road, the government is now inviting contractors to submit bids to take on the project.
The tender notice states, “The objective is to meet community needs by providing public amenities that promote public health while maintaining the natural beauty of the area, enhancing the overall appeal and experience for both residents and visitors alike.”
The plan involves building a 545-square-foot restroom, which will be connected to the public sewerage system, as well as a 245-foot-long concrete sidewalk at the beach entrance along West Bay Road.
The successful contractor will also be required to install a landscape buffer adjacent to The Pinnacle apartment complex next door to the beach.
During the planning application phase, residents of The Pinnacle had raised objections to the project, which had initially included four cabanas and a playground, as well as the bathroom. Government later abandoned its plans for the cabanas and playground.
As part of the approval conditions put in place by the Central Planning Authority, landscape screening must be put in place between the restroom and the border of The Pinnacle property.
The site must also have turtle-friendly lighting as Governors Beach is a turtle nesting site.
The restroom will be located where the porto-toilets now stand.
According to the tender documents, the work should be completed within six months of a contract being signed.

Marvelous! This beach is such a favorite of locals and deserves the best!

I do wish this could be re considered. Caymanian children sewerage this amenity.
