Rotary Club of Grand Cayman brings spirit of Christmas to Heroes Square

Residents and visitors were in fine voice as they came together for carol singing and marking the festive season during the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman’s ’59th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony’ in Heroes Square, George Town.

The event, held on 2 Dec., opened with a Christmas medley performed by the UCCI Steel Band. Among the attendees were Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, who delivered a Christmas message, and Governor Jane Owen, who lit up the tree.

During his remarks, Christian Victory, current president of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman, said the event “is an essential part of launching the Christmas holiday season in Grand Cayman”.

Victory encouraged attendees to “pause and take a moment to reflect on another year ending and appreciate the true meaning of Christmas, the spirit of joy, the spirit of giving, [and] the spirit of peace”.

He added, “Somehow, not only for Christmas, but all the long year through, the joy that you give to others, is the joy that comes back to you.”

Other featured performances included the St. Ignatius Strings delivering ‘Jolly Old Saint Nick’, soloist Colindra Rodericka performing ‘I’ll be Home for Christmas’ and the Rotary Choir singing ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’.

The UCCI band serenaded attendees as the event came to a close, and kids gathered with excitement and glee as Santa Claus made a surprise visit.
