The Cayman National Choir and Orchestra is once again celebrating music, tradition and community at its annual Christmas carol concert, themed ‘Sleighbells and Seashells at Elmslie’.

“It brings me great joy to be able to present this Christmas concert, which has become a well-loved tradition on our island,” Choir Director Melody Gifford told the Cayman Compass.

The 25-member orchestra and 35-member choir will present two evenings of carols and festive music, led by Gifford and orchestra director Alina Makhina.

“We are really excited to share some really fun arrangements that you haven’t heard before. In addition to the familiar carols in which the audience is invited to sing along, you will hear from the choir an arrangement of ‘Jingle Bells’ which incorporates several movements from Tchaikovsky’s ‘Nutcracker Suite’. We’ll also sing a gorgeous arrangement of ‘Mary, Did you Know?’ and a moving contemporary piece called ‘Welcome to Our World’,” Gifford said.

Gifford also confirmed the CNCO is partnering with the Sunrise Adult Learning Centre to work with some of their students, who will perform a piece at the concert.

Gifford said, for the Cayman National Choir, “Connecting with our community is very important to us, and we feel that our organisation highlights the beautiful spirit of the season and the importance of music and culture in our society, both for Caymanian people and expats alike.”

The choir, founded in 1977 by E.M. McCoy, serves as the resident company of the Cayman National Cultural Foundation.

The performances start at 7:30pm on 17 and 19 Dec. at the Elmslie Memorial United Church.

While admission is free, organisers are encouraging attendees to arrive early, as seats are limited. For those unable to attend in person, the concert will be broadcast live on Radio Cayman and CIGTV.
