Churches across the Cayman Islands are preparing for their annual Easter services, a period that marks the end of Lent – 40 days of reflection and fasting – and the culmination of Holy Week, which includes Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

While many churches have steady weekly attendance, congregations typically grow significantly during Easter. Dave Jorge, worship pastor at First Baptist Church of Grand Cayman, said, “More than 1,000 people come to our concerts on Friday and Sunday night. Easter Sunday morning is also one of our largest services of the year. We also get a fair amount of tourists that join us in the special services.”

St. Ignatius Catholic Church also experiences a notable increase in parishioners during the Easter period. O’Neil Miller, director of religious education, explained, “In recent years, we have seen a significant increase in attendance at masses from Palm Sunday through Holy Week, including Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Good Friday’s Celebration of the Lord’s Passion, and the Masses of the Resurrection on Saturday night and throughout Easter Sunday.”

To accommodate the growing number of worshippers, St. Ignatius has added additional masses on both Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Miller added, “To further assist with overflow, we have also rented a tent equipped with audio-visual facilities, allowing as many people as possible to fully participate in these sacred celebrations.”

Elmslie Memorial United Church – one of the oldest churches in the Cayman Islands – also reports a larger number of churchgoers during the season. Elmslie Memorial has a Holy Week schedule that includes a Good Friday service at 9am on 3 April and a Cayman male voice choir at 7pm. For Easter Sunday on 5 April, the service is scheduled for 10.30am.

Message of Easter

For many in the religious community, the message of Easter remains a central focus. “Easter is the season where Christians celebrate the most important event in the history of the world – God’s provision for mankind in the person of Jesus Christ coming into our world to give his life for the forgiveness of sins,” said Jorge.

Miller added, “Together, we commemorate the Lord’s Passion and enter into the Sacred Triduum – His Last Supper, His suffering and death, and most importantly, His glorious Resurrection on Easter Sunday.”

Many churches have posted their full Easter schedules on their websites and social media platforms to help guide worshippers through the Holy Season.
