The Cayman Islands community is encouraged to come out and welcome home our swim team, which includes national sporting hero Jordan Crooks, who is returning from his masterclass in Budapest where he broke the world record and defended his world championship title.
Crooks finished his 50m freestyle final in 20.19 to win gold, having broken the world record, twice, en route to claim the title.
On Monday, during the fifth sitting of Parliament, Sports Minister Isaac Rankine acknowledged the efforts of Crooks, 22, his sister, Jillian, and Kyra Rabess at the 2024 World Aquatic Championships.
Rankine announced that the team will arrive at the Owen Roberts International Airport on Tuesday, 17 Dec., at 2:30pm.
“To our community, we invite you to welcome home our athletes,” Rankine said.
In addition, he confirmed that the government will host an appreciation event this Saturday for the three swimmers.
“The Cayman Islands government will be hosting an event on Cardinal Avenue, on Saturday, 21 December, 2024 from 6pm to 8:30pm and we invite you all to attend,” Rankine said.
Ahead of the team’s homecoming, governor Jane Owen also praised Crooks as an “ambassador for Caymanian sport”.
“Congratulations to Jordan Crooks on his incredible, world-record-breaking performance at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships,” Owen said.
“We are immensely proud to celebrate and support his outstanding achievements, both in the pool and as an ambassador for Caymanian sport,” she said in a Facebook post on Monday.
