Cayman’s largest one-day Agriculture Show returns on Ash Wednesday, 5 March, at the Agricultural Grounds in Lower Valley.

Now in its 56th year, the annual show, hosted by the Cayman Islands Agricultural Society, has become a staple across the islands. The event attracts hundreds of people, including from the Sister Islands, to the Agriculture Pavilion for a day packed with family-oriented activities, showcasing local farming, food, agriculture products, livestock and agribusiness.

Along with an official opening ceremony, the event features farm-related vendors, livestock, plant and produce exhibitions, demonstrations and competitions, sales booths, local food and drinks, musical entertainment, kids activities and a play zone, and the annual show raffle.

“The annual CIAS Agricultural Show is the largest family-friendly event in the Cayman Islands. It’s something many people look forward to attending each year. It’s also great value for attendees … What other event, that has such a diverse offering, could you attend all day for $25?” Justin Woods, president of the Cayman Islands Agricultural Society, told the Cayman Compass.

Buying local to support the local economy

This year’s theme is ‘Food Security – Everybody’s Business’, which sheds light on issues like food prices, shortages and nutritional security.

Support for agriculture in the Cayman Islands is of paramount importance, Woods said.

“History has proven that the world could change in an instant. If we want local farmers to supply food during the next crisis, support them now so they could still be farming in the future. If you want that local beef, goat, and pork for Christmas, support the local farmers during the year as well,” he said.

“Buying local supports the local economy as well, as it keeps more money circulating here.”

The annual show will be held on 5 March at the Stacy Watler Agriculture Pavilion in Lower Valley, Bodden Town, from 7am to 6pm. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children, and free for kids under 2 and seniors over 65.

To opener in this year’s event, Jamaican-American reggae singer and musician Tarrus Riley, is set to perform at the Roots, Rock, Reggae concert on Saturday, 1 March.
