A confrontation between two drivers during peak traffic on Rex Crighton Boulevard has resulted in police arresting one man for assault and warning the other for intended prosecution.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service attended the scene of the conflict in Bodden Town, captured in video distributed on popular social media accounts, around 6pm on Wednesday.
“On arriving at the scene, officers observed two vehicles and their occupants on the side of the road, and the occupants speaking with first responders,” police said.
The confrontation broke out between two male drivers, a 72-year-old man of North Side and a 17-year-old adolescent. Social media videos depict the man opening the adolescent’s car door and promptly being placed into a headlock.
“It was reported that the man exited his vehicle and confronted the juvenile. An altercation took place between both parties which led to the man receiving facial injuries,” police said.
The 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm due to the man’s facial injuries. The older man was warned for intended prosecution for common assault, which is not an arrestable offence.
“Police are aware there are several videos of the incident circulating on social media, and that the incident occurred in peak hour traffic whereby many motorists would have seen the incident take place,” police said.
RCIPS is requesting public assistance in investigating the matter. Witnesses with information or video footage are asked to call 911 or contact the Bodden Town Police Station at 947-2220.
